Aiming at improving the quality of service and efficiency of the Public Transport Network, the Ministry of Transport has decided to implement a tram network connecting the City Centre with the soUTHern suburbs. Tram will satisfy the increased transport needs and contribute to the protection of the environment. The total length of the tramway will be 23.7 km and the maximum capacity estimated to be 8,500 persons per hour and direction. The project is supervised by Tram S.A. (linuxweb.internet.gr/tramsa/html/gr/index.php) a new company established especially for this purpose, as a subsidiary of Attiko Metro. The two tramlines are expected to be in operation before the Olympic Games.

The tram is supposed to run from Syntagma Square to the Paleo Faliro coast, subsequently branching to Neo Faliro and Voula. During the Athens 2004 Olympics, it will be a vital transport medium to the coastal sports complexes of Faliro, Hellenikon and Agios Kosmas. The new tram systems much-awaited revival comes at a time when many European cities are increasingly ostracising automobiles from their city centres in favour of cleaner, quieter, less obtrusive tram transport.
