TNO Built Environment and Geosciences/Environment and Health

The primary tasks of the Netherlands TNO Built Environment and Geosciences/Environment and Health is to support and assist trade and industry, government authorities and others in technological innovation and technical solutions (http://www.tno.nl/bouw_en_ondergrond/kwaliteit_van_de_leefomge/leefomgeving_en_gezondhei/).

Activities are directed towards the development of measuring instruments and systems, methods and tools in applied physics and information technology. The work is to a considerable extent carried out under research contracts with industrial partners. The Sound and Vibration Division of TNO has a staff of approximately 40 and is one of the major independent R&D institutes engaged in noise control in Europe. Its R&D activities are focussed on environmental acoustics, flow acoustics and structural acoustics and vibration. It renders consultancy services in noise control engineering to industry and trade and in noise abatement policies to the government. In the field of noise and vibration control, the Division is active in product development and application, passive and active noise and vibration control, prediction and characterisation of noise generated by mechanical sources and long distance sound propagation in the atmosphere.

Other activities concern transportation, logistics, and related environment and health issues as well as physical planning. The TNO Department Environment and Health has an international database on effects of noise that is used to support noise policy, in the Netherlands as well as in other countries, and in the EU. For completing the EU directive on environmental noise studies has been conducted commissioned by EU/ DG Env. TNO has been and is participating in various EU projects, e.g. Harmonoise, Unite and Imagine.
