Banverket

Banverket (http://www.banverket.se) is the authority responsible for rail traffic in Sweden This means that we follow and conduct development in the railway sector, assist Parliament and the Government with railway issues, are responsible for the operation and management of state track installations, co-ordinate the local, regional and interregional railway services, and provide support for research and development in the rail sector.

Banverket's vision

Banverket creates the conditions necessary for safe, punctual, fast and fairly priced rail transport An ecologically sustainable society presupposes increased rail traffic, Consequently, the railways have a natural role to play in the transportation of people and goods. Personnel with a combination of competence and keen awareness create confidence in the railways and Banverket.

Goals

Banverket is an authority that is primarily funded by Government grants. Banverket's activities are steered by the Parliamentary transport policy goals. The transport policy goals consist of one overall goal and five sub-goals. The overall goal is to provide a system of transport for citizens and the business sector all over the country that is both economically effective and sustainable in the long term.

The five sub-goals are:

1. an accessible transport system
2. a high standard of transport quality
3. safe traffic
4. a good environment
5. positive regional development 6. a transport system offering equal opportunities

Sectoral duties

Banverket has overall responsibility for the entire railway system. This means that we follow and promote development throughout the entire railway sector.

Administration - track maintenance

Banverket's administrative units plan and procure operation and maintenance as well as the conversion and extension of the state railway installations. The orders are placed internally, from the production units, or externally from contractors and consultants. The Head Office and five railway regions have administrative duties together with Banverket Telecom.

Production

Banverket Production, Banverket Consulting, Banverket Industrial Division, Banverket Materials Service, Banverket Railway Training Centre and Banverket IT are production units that provide production and services within the railway sector after procurement or ordering. Banverket has approximately 6 500 employees.

Research

Banverket's sectoral responsibility within the area of railways means, among other things, that Banverket shall initiate, plan and support applied socially-motivated research within the area.

The basic starting point for Banverket's R&D work is described in Banverket's research and development policy. Banverket invites external R&D researchers to submit applications for R&D funds. Applications can be submitted at any time of the year.
